Percentages Made Simple: 3 Calculations for Daily Life
Percentages aren't just for students โ they govern shopping discounts, tax bills, raises and profit margins. Good news: every calculation falls into three types.
Type 1: What is X% of Y?
The most common: discounts.
A 240 shirt with 25% off โ 240 ร 25 รท 100 = 60 discount โ you pay 180
Type 2: X is what percent of Y?
For measuring part of whole:
You earned 85 from a 500 sale โ 85 รท 500 ร 100 = 17% margin
Also for tracking progress: 34 of 40 tasks done โ 85% complete
Type 3: Percentage change between two numbers
For increases and decreases โ where most mistakes happen:
Salary 8,000 โ 9,200: (9,200 โ 8,000) รท 8,000 ร 100 = +15%
Stock 50 โ 42: โ16%
Common trap: +20% then โ20% does NOT return to start! 100 โ 120 โ 96. The base always shifts.
