Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule states that you can withdraw 4% of your retirement portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) and have a high probability of not running out of money over a 30-year retirement. Monthly draw = nest egg × 4% ÷ 12.

What return rate should I use?

Historical stock market returns average about 7% annually after inflation. For a conservative estimate, use 5–6%. For a mixed portfolio (stocks and bonds), 4–6% is common.

Does this include Social Security or pension?

No. Add your expected Social Security or pension income to the monthly draw to get your total retirement income.

Is this financial advice?

No. This is a projection tool based on simplified assumptions. Actual returns vary, and retirement planning involves many factors. Consult a certified financial planner.
