Frequently asked questions
What do the BMI categories mean?
The World Health Organization classes BMI below 18.5 as underweight, 18.5–24.9 as normal, 25–29.9 as overweight and 30 or above as obese. BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis of body fat or health.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so very muscular people can appear "overweight". Athletes should treat the result as a rough guide only.
