Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention varies — in the US, tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. This calculator lets you enter the tax separately so you can choose.
What does "Round up" do?
Rounding up means each person pays the next whole number above their exact share. The small extra goes to the server as a slightly higher tip, and cash payment becomes much easier.
How much should I tip?
Tipping customs vary by country: 15–20% is standard in the US, 10% is common in the UK and Middle East, and tipping is not expected in Japan. The calculator works for any percentage.
Can I use it for unequal splits?
This calculator divides the total equally. For unequal splits (e.g. one person had more), calculate the total and tip first, then manually assign shares.
What if the bill already includes a service charge?
If a service charge is already included, you may not need to add a tip. Enter 0% as the tip percentage to just split the bill equally.
