The three formulas (weights in kg)

h is height in inches (60 in = 5 ft), and the result is the estimated weight in kilograms.

FormulaMenWomen
Devine formula50 + 2.3 × (h − 60)45.5 + 2.3 × (h − 60)
Robinson formula52 + 1.9 × (h − 60)49 + 1.7 × (h − 60)
Miller formula56.2 + 1.41 × (h − 60)53.1 + 1.36 × (h − 60)

The healthy weight range is the healthy BMI interval (18.5 to 24.9) multiplied by the square of your height in metres.

How to use

  1. Choose your sex — the formulas use different baseline weights for men and women.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres; the tool converts it to feet and inches for you.
  3. Click Calculate to compare the three formula estimates and the healthy BMI weight range.

Frequently asked questions

What does "ideal weight" actually mean?

These formulas come from clinical practice, where they were used to dose medicines and set ventilator settings — not to define a beauty standard. Each one compresses a population average into a single number, so treat the results as a rough reference band for your height. Health depends far more on habits, body composition and fitness than on hitting one figure.

Are these results medical advice?

No. All outputs are statistical estimates for healthy adults and are neither a diagnosis nor a prescription. The formulas ignore age, muscle mass, bone structure and body composition, and they were not designed for athletes, children, pregnant women or older adults. Use them for orientation, and consult a doctor for any personal decision about your weight.

Why do the three formulas disagree?

Each formula is a linear equation fitted to a different dataset in a different decade: Devine in 1974, Robinson and Miller in 1983, with slightly different baselines and per-inch increments. Differences of a few kilograms between them are normal and show how soft the concept is. A sensible personal target usually lies somewhere within the span the three estimates cover.

Which result should I follow?

None exactly — the healthy BMI range is usually the most practical because it gives an interval instead of a single point. Within that interval, aim for the weight where you feel strong, sleep well and your basic medical markers such as blood pressure, blood glucose and lipids look good. Discuss specific targets with a healthcare professional.

Why do heights below 5 feet give odd values?

The formulas are built around inches over 5 feet, so at shorter heights the linear equations keep subtracting and can produce unrealistically small numbers. They were fitted on adult populations and were simply not designed for that range. Treat any very low output as a formula artefact and rely on the BMI range or professional advice instead.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Everything is computed in your browser the moment you click Calculate — your height and sex never leave your device, and nothing is uploaded, logged or shared. Once the page has loaded, the tool even works offline, so you can re-check results any time without sending a single byte anywhere.
